Accomplishments (so far!)
Two successful presentations to the Buffalo Common Council in January 2005
Buffalo Common Council voted NO on Trathen's logging proposal in January 2005
Buffalo Common Council voted YES to conduct a proper State Environmental Quality
Review
State Assemblyman Brodsky has an open oversight investigation into the State's actions
Favorable press and stream of letters to the editor in the Buffalo News and other
media
Put together a professional presentation to the NYS Open Space Committee,
generated enthusiasm, and the property is under consideration
Gone straight to the Governor and met with his representative Bill Heaney to
tour the buildings and the forest and present our concerns and goals
Have made great strides assessing the biodiversity of the land, with
wonderful finds - old growth trees, mature and diverse forests, healthy wetlands,
ponds, streams, plant and bird diversity, diverse habitat, etc. Even
found an abandoned park!
Have an action plan for getting agencies to remediate the dumps adjacent to
the former hospital campus
Started a Petition directed to the State of New York and City of Buffalo to express
the will of the people
Have a volunteer web designer, a web address, and everyone is actively working on
web content
Generated interest in the historic building preservation community, which is providing
direct assistance
Getting other individuals and groups involved to introduce them to the property and
strengthen this effort
Finding support among the locals that is being pulled together to strengthen
our voice
Filed a citizens' suit on September 1, 2005, against the Dormitory Authority of the
State of New York, the Empire State Development Corp., the NYS Office of Mental Retardation
and Developmental Disabilities, the City of Buffalo, and Trathen Land Co.
