Best Reuse Ideas Contest Winners

21 people formed ideas and submitted them in the Best Reuse Ideas Contest. Thank you ALL!

Narrowing down the winners was most sincerely, really painful. The suggestions informed the prizes, so we ended up with three new prize categories, multiple winners in some categories, and increased the prizes from 3 to 8. (We had to do away with the Most Creative category, because, really, when people are coming up with animal sanctuary, robotics campus, holistic health spa, traumatic brain/spine injury unit, museum, bed and breakfast, cultural resort, well, it was just impossible to do.)

Without further ado,

Best Reuse of the Stained Glass Dome/Dining Hall Rotunda:

TIM ARNTS

For suggesting a wedding/events center. This turned out to be a wildly popular idea in the contest, but Tim suggested it first, along with several other good ideas!

John Hopper Coxhead Award:
(If we can borrow the name of the renowned American architect who designed the original footprint of the facility which opened in 1912.)

KRISTIN BOEHLER MARFOGLIA

For the best historic preservation idea - a hands-on education center for the historic preservation arts and trades.

Comprehensive Reuse Awards:

TOM MILITELLO

For presenting a detailed plan that would serve seniors, veterans, adults, children, and the greater community in diverse ways by incorporating healthcare, rehabilitation, educational, agricultural, technological, and recreational uses encompassing the entire property

BARRY BOYER

For suggesting a Long-Term Ecological Research Center funded by the National Science Foundation for the historic structures and suggesting recreational uses for the open space, and linking it all to the greater community by the tie-in to ecologically significant study areas in the region.

WALLY ELTON

For being the first to suggest a multi-use hub of activity linking the buildings with what's going on outdoors, and further linking the reuses to the greater community in creative ways.

Community Spirit Awards:

KEVIN SALZMAN

For thinking of the needs of the surrounding communities and suggesting that flood-ravaged Tri-County Hospital be relocated at J.N. Adam, for anticipating and understanding the overwhelming consensus of this greater community for preserving the natural environment and suggesting a wildlife/nature preserve, and for generally being a rah, rah kinda guy during this contest.

AMANDA OLSON

For thinking of community needs and suggesting the empty residential area be given for Habitat for Humanity/HUD housing, and for suggesting the location be honored for its history, all the way back to Commodore Perry.

James Noble Adam Award:
(If we can borrow the name of the City of Buffalo Mayor who donated the land for the facility to the people back in 1909.)

HELEN HILL

For suggesting an arts institute for the buildings and a nature education center for the green space, uses we think reinvent the site in ways that relate back to some of the same reasons it was chosen as an ideal healing center in the first place - tranquil setting, natural beauty, panoramic views, diverse natural resources - ample sunlight, wind, water, vegetation - and a great vibe.
